The Bangladesh Tanker Owners Association has declared an indefinite halt to fuel transportation nationwide starting August 1. This strike has been initiated based on six key demands, including issues related to harassment on highways.
The association provided this update in a statement released today, Friday (July 18). Among the primary demands outlined in the statement are-
- Cancellation of the 25-year economic lifespan for tank trucks: The decision to impose a 25-year economic lifespan on tank trucks, similar to that of regular buses, trucks, or covered vans, should be revoked and reassessed based on actual conditions. They argue that tank trucks exclusively transport fuel, which is a one-way service, making comparisons with other vehicles unrealistic.
- Nationwide route permits: Given that tank trucks deliver fuel to various districts, route permits should be granted for travel across the country.
- Reduction in income tax: The recent gazette that raised the income tax for tankers from 15,000 to 30,000 taka should be annulled. Since tankers operate under a fixed fare established by the government and cannot charge freely, they believe that the sudden tax increase is unjustifiable.
- Issuance of heavy driving licenses: The long-standing light driving licenses held by tanker drivers should be promptly upgraded to heavy licenses based on merit.
- Cessation of police harassment: Highway and district police must cease the harassment of tanker drivers under the pretext of document checks.
- Resolution of outstanding demands: The unresolved issues of the petrol pump and tanker owners’ unity council should be addressed swiftly.
Traders are concerned that if this strike is implemented, it could lead to significant disruptions in the national fuel supply system
