B Mirror Report: The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry has sought a Tk 4.0 billion grant from the finance ministry to procure 100 electric buses for the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) as part of efforts to build an environmentally friendly and sustainable public transport system.

Officials said the proposal has been submitted to the Finance Division seeking budgetary support to introduce electric vehicles into the state-owned transport fleet and modernise the country’s public transport network.

The initiative is in line with the government’s election pledge to develop an integrated, efficient and green transport system. Authorities believe the introduction of electric buses in the BRTC fleet is both timely and necessary amid growing concerns over urban pollution and fuel costs.

Once purchased, the buses are expected to operate on key routes within Dhaka metropolitan area as well as on inter-district routes linking divisional cities.

According to officials, the project is expected to reduce fuel expenses, lower carbon emissions and improve passenger services over the long term.

The Road Transport and Highways Division has requested the Finance Division to allocate the funds urgently to facilitate early implementation of the plan.

Under the proposed budget, Tk 2.50 billion has been allocated for purchasing the buses, while Tk 500 million has been set aside for establishing 25 charging stations.

The proposal also includes Tk 350 million for spare parts and related equipment, Tk 200 million for training and technical support, and Tk 250 million for transportation, registration and other related expenses.

Another Tk 200 million has been earmarked for depot infrastructure development, maintenance and associated costs, bringing the total estimated project cost to Tk 4.0 billion.

A Finance Division official confirmed that the proposal had been received and is currently under review.
