B Mirror Report: Chattogram port is set to receive three more ships carrying roughly 200,000 tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) over the next five days.
One of the vessels has already entered Bangladesh’s territorial waters, while the remaining two are expected to dock by Wednesday. Combined, the three tankers have an estimated capacity of around 193,000 tonnes of LNG.
On Thursday, the ‘HL Puffin’ tanker, transporting 61,997 tonnes of LNG from Australia, arrived near the Kutubdia coast, according to Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim. The other two vessels, the ‘New Brave’ with 61,000 tonnes from Indonesia and the ‘Celsius Galapagos’ carrying about 70,000 tonnes from the United States, are scheduled to reach the port by midweek.
Md. Nurul Alam, Senior Deputy General Manager of Uni Global Business Limited, the local shipping agent handling the two incoming tankers, confirmed that both ships remain on schedule.
Although about 70 percent of Bangladesh’s LNG imports are sourced from Qatar, recent instability in the Middle East has sparked concerns over consistent supply. Two Qatari tankers were anticipated this month, but only one has arrived, while the other is still anchored at Ras Laffan Port.
This month, seven LNG tankers have reached Chattogram, compared to the usual 10 to 11 arrivals per month. Petrobangla, the state-owned entity responsible for LNG imports, is exploring alternative sources to mitigate supply uncertainties. Despite these challenges, officials do not expect a major energy crisis at this time.
