The contribution of industrial sector to the economy has decreased

In the last 11 years, the contribution of the industrial sector has come down to 8.77 percent. Which was 11.54 percent in 2013. In addition, in 2013, there were 78 lakh 18 thousand 565 economic units in the country. Which currently stands at 1 crore 18 lakh 77 thousand 364. That is, in the last 11 years, the number of economic units in the country has increased by 40 lakh 58 thousand 799 or 51.91 percent.

This information was given at the release of the preliminary report of the Economic Census-2024 at the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) conference room in the capital Agargaon on Wednesday (January 29). Planning and Education Advisor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud was the chief guest at the event. President of the Economic Task Force Dr. K. S. Murshid was the special guest. Director General of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics Mohammad Mizanur Rahman presided over the event. Project Director of the project SM Shakil Akhtar spoke.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the total production in the manufacturing sector in the country in the 2012-13 fiscal year was one lakh 97 thousand 127 crore taka. According to the latest estimate, its amount has increased to about 1 lakh 32 thousand 735 crore taka in the last fiscal year. The total production value of the manufacturing sector has increased about 5.75 times in 11 years. In this regard, the government has shown an average growth of more than 14 percent every year. Among them, in the 2019-20 fiscal year, even in the year when the gross domestic product (GDP) collapsed due to the impact of the coronavirus, this sector showed a growth of more than 4 percent. In addition, the manufacturing sector has shown double-digit growth every year, and even in some years, it has touched 18 percent. During this period, the Hasina government also claimed that the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the total GDP has increased from 17.27 percent to 23.19 percent. This calculation of GDP growth shown by the manufacturing sector in the industrial sector over the years does not match the preliminary results of the Economic Census-2024 conducted by BBS.

The preliminary calculation of the economic census says that the number of economic units (establishments) in the manufacturing sector has increased by only 15.39 percent in the last 10 years. However, compared to the census conducted from 2001 to 2003, the number of economic units in this sector increased by 100.42 percent in the 2013 census. The report reveals that overall, the growth of economic units in the country has decreased.

The report shows that due to the relatively low growth in manufacturing sector establishments, the contribution of this sector to the economic unit has come down to 8.77 percent. It says that in 2003, the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the total economic unit was 12.14 percent, which came down to 11.54 percent in 2013. As a result, the contribution of manufacturing sector establishments has decreased in two consecutive censuses. In the last 10 years, the number of service sector establishments has increased from 69 lakh 15 thousand 982 to 1 crore 8 lakh 35 thousand 896, according to BBS. As a result, the contribution of the service sector to the total establishments has increased from 88.86 percent to 91.23 percent.

In the last decade, the size of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) has increased by 40 lakh crore taka. During this period, 40 lakh 58 thousand households and business establishments have been added to the country’s economic activities. Of these, 39 lakh 19 thousand establishments have been added to the service sector and only 1 lakh 38 thousand have been added to the manufacturing sector. Due to this, only 6.2 million people have been employed in the last 10 years.

According to the Economic Census report, in the last decade, 40,58,000 economic units have increased. Of these, 39,19,000 have increased in the service sector and 1,38,885 in the manufacturing sector; 1,18,77,364 in economic units by type. Of these, 6,288,214 are permanent, 5,76,621 are temporary. 5,12,529 are economic households. Exactly a decade ago, there were 7,818,565 establishments. Of these, 4,514,091 are permanent, 4,82,903 are temporary. And 2,82,571 are economic households. That is, 4,058,799 economic units have increased.

In addition, among the economic units, there are 83 lakh 46 thousand 161 in rural areas, and 35 lakh 31 thousand 203 in urban areas. Earlier in 2013, there were 55 lakh 89 thousand 19 in rural areas, and 22 lakh 29 thousand 546 in urban areas. Among the local or permanent institutions, there are 39 lakh 41 thousand 68 in rural areas, and 23 lakh 47 thousand 146 in urban areas; which was 29 lakh 36 thousand 459 in rural areas and 15 lakh 77 thousand 632 in urban areas 10 years ago. Out of the 5 lakh 76 thousand 621 temporary institutions, there are 2 lakh 84 thousand 909 in urban areas and 2 lakh 91 lakh 712 in rural areas; which was 2 lakh 76 thousand 693 in 2013.

According to the report, in 2024, 3 crore 7 lakh 61 thousand 34 people were employed in various industrial institutions. Of these, 2 crore 5 lakh 6 lakh 30 thousand 298 were males. Women are 51 lakh 28 thousand 677, transgenders are 2 thousand 59. Previously, employment increased by 1 crore 33 lakh in the 10 years from 2003 to 2013. And in 2013, employment stood at 2 crore 45 lakh 850. Accordingly, new employment has increased by only 62 lakh 60 thousand 184 in the last 10 years.
