Surge of Big Investors in Stock Market

The country’s capital market now has more than one crore taka more investors. More investors with sums over 100 crore and 500 crore taka have also joined the market.

Large and medium-sized investors have increased in number compared to the previous year, but the number of very small investors has decreased, according to data from the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).

While small investors are exiting the capital market, the number of large investors is on the rise. According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), the number of BO account holders with a portfolio value of 50 crore taka or more has grown to 733 during the one-year period from June 30, 2024, to June 30, 2025, up from 696 the previous year.

The count of investors with a portfolio value exceeding 100 crore taka has increased by 22, and those with more than 500 crore taka have also risen by two.

Simultaneously, the number of medium investors, whose portfolio values range from 50 lakh taka to 50 crore taka, has seen a significant increase. For instance, the number of investors with 50 million or more has grown from 22,907 to 24,225. Additionally, the number of investors with 10 million or more has risen by approximately 323.

Conversely, the number of very small investors, defined as those with less than 100,000 taka, has significantly decreased. In June 2024, there were 916,157 such BO accounts, which have dropped to 831,748 over the course of a year.

Analysts suggest that this shift reflects a rise in the number of quality and relatively long-term investors in the capital market. This trend also conveys a positive outlook for market stability and an increase in institutional investment.

An official associated with the BSEC stated that the current focus is on attracting quality investors rather than merely increasing the number of investors. The proportion of responsible and sustainable investors in the market is growing, which bodes well for the future.

According to a BSEC official, the focus is now on increasing the number of quality investors rather than the quantity of investors. The market is seeing an increase in the proportion of sustainable and ethical investors, which bodes well for the future.

Experts predict that stability will return to the market by growing the share of seasoned and professional investors, even though the drop in regular investors is lessening the likelihood of unduly emotional trading.
