Imran Jhenaidah Corresponent : A patient reportedly died due to a doctor’s negligence at Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex in Jhenaidah, sparking outrage among local volunteer and humanitarian organizations.
On Sunday night, Hriday, a polytechnic student and son of Milton Biswas from Ausia village in Shailkupa municipality, was bitten by a snake inside his home. He was rushed to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, but reportedly died early Monday morning as doctors delayed administering antivenom, allegedly due to negligence.
In protest, a human chain was organized Tuesday afternoon in front of the hospital, under the banner of various social and humanitarian organizations.
Speakers at the event claimed that volunteer Mehedi Hasan Hriday died due to medical negligence, and that the hospital is riddled with irregularities and corruption. They demanded the formation of an investigation committee against the on-duty doctors and hospital authorities.
Later, Dr. Rashed Al Mamun, the hospital’s Health and Family Planning Officer, addressed the angry crowd. He assured them that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the snakebite victim’s death and that appropriate action would be taken. He also advised the protestors to file a formal complaint with the Civil Surgeon regarding any corruption or irregularities, so that an official investigation committee could be formed.
Following Dr. Mamun’s assurance, the protestors agreed to temporarily suspend their movement. However, the leaders of the social and humanitarian organizations warned that they would launch a stronger protest if their demands are not met.
