PM stresses law and order, anti-corruption drive

B Mirror Report: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said his government is prioritising the restoration of peace and security in public life through improved law and order and strict measures to control corruption.

“The new government has started its journey amid a fragile economy affected by corruption and misgovernance, a weak governance structure, and a deteriorating law and order situation,” he said while addressing the Independence Award-2026 distribution ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

He added that restoring peace and security in public life remains one of the top priorities of his government.

Bangladesh has crossed 55 years of independence, the Prime Minister noted, adding that while the nation has achieved significant progress, challenges and shortcomings still remain.

Calling for national unity, Tarique Rahman, also the BNP chairman, said there should be no revenge, vengeance, or unnecessary disputes in building a self-reliant and prosperous Bangladesh.

Quoting Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, he said, “National unity is our strength, division is our weakness,” adding that differences of opinion should not turn into hostility.

He also warned that “anti-Bangladesh elements are still waiting for an opportunity,” urging vigilance.

At the beginning of his speech, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and expressed respect for the injured and freedom fighters, saying their sacrifice continues to inspire the nation.

He said the Independence Award, introduced in 1977 by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, recognises outstanding contributions to the country and its people.

Tarique Rahman also stressed the importance of remembering historical contributions of national leaders, warning against selective historical narratives.

Highlighting governance reforms, he said the government has already begun implementing commitments made in its manifesto and the July Charter.

Turning to education, he stressed the need for a modern and job-oriented system to meet the demands of a competitive global economy, noting that employment generation for the large youth population is a major challenge.

He also emphasised women’s safety, saying national development cannot be achieved without ensuring security for more than half of the population.

On economic management, the Prime Minister said his government is trying to maintain stability despite global inflationary pressure, adding that fuel prices have not been increased and subsidies are being provided to reduce public burden.

He urged citizens to avoid unnecessary extravagance in both state and personal life.

Earlier, he conferred the Independence Award-2026 on 15 distinguished individuals, including former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and five institutions in recognition of their contributions.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani moderated the ceremony, which was attended by senior political leaders, cabinet members, diplomats, judges, military and civil officials, and award recipients along with their families.
