Patuakhali Tops Nation in Birth–Death Registration

Patuakhali Correspondent: Among all 64 districts of Bangladesh, Patuakhali secured the top position in November 2025 for birth and death registration performance. Based on the evaluated rates of both birth and death registrations, the district achieved an impressive combined score of 112.9 percent, placing it at the highest national rank for the month.

According to government data, in November 2025, a total of 2,092 birth registrations were completed in Patuakhali within the one-year eligible timeframe. The estimated number of expected births for that month was 2,311, giving the district an 86 percent birth registration rate. During the same period, the estimated number of deaths was 730, while 1,021 death registrations were completed—resulting in a 140 percent achievement rate. Averaging these two indicators, Patuakhali’s combined performance stood at 112.9 percent, the highest in the country for November.

Within the Barishal division, the remaining two districts Bhola and Barguna ranked second and third respectively in under-evaluation. In Bhola, the November birth registration rate was 97 percent, and death registration 110 percent, combining to an average of 103.2 percent. Barguna recorded 93 percent for birth registration and 105 percent for death registration, with a combined score of 99 percent.

Jewel Rana, Deputy Director of the Local Government Department, said that Patuakhali’s continued success in birth and death registration is the result of coordinated teamwork.
“Patuakhali is now a national model for birth and death registration,” he said.
“We are working in close coordination with union parishads, the health department, the regional statistics office, and all relevant stakeholders at the field level. Regular monitoring, increased awareness, and technology-based management have made this success possible. We are adopting even more advanced plans to maintain this performance in the future.”

He added, “Achieving a 140 percent death registration rate proves that Patuakhali is demonstrating the highest level of efficiency in data collection, verification, and registration in the country. We are also making steady progress in birth registration, moving toward sustainable development.”

Analysis shows that not only in November, but throughout 2024, Patuakhali ranked third nationwide and first in the Barishal division in average birth-death registration performance. The district has consistently placed in the top ten for most months of the year.

Officials and stakeholders say that to bring registration performance even closer to 100 percent, community engagement, service simplification, and prompt response at the field level will be further strengthened. They hope that if the current approach continues, Patuakhali will maintain its top position in the coming years.
