Cigarettes, bidis, and other tobacco products are estimated to generate around 25% of the VAT revenue. Illegal tobacco products are seriously interfering with the nation’s overall revenue collection. Numerous brands of illegal domestic and foreign tobacco products are being widely marketed in local markets in cities, villages, and remote regions of the nation, according to news reports on social media and media outlets.
This is damaging public health and tarnishing the reputation of the National Board of Revenue. The government is losing a huge amount of revenue.
It said that a committee has been formed with the revenue officer concerned of the circle as the convener to conduct regular campaigns. Where representatives of the product manufacturing companies, police representatives of the concerned police station, BGB representatives of the concerned sector/battalion, Ansar and VDP representatives of the concerned district/battalion have been made members of the committee. The concerned assistant revenue officer has been given the responsibility of member secretary.
The order said that this committee has been formed under the powers of Section 82(1) of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012 to assist the VAT officer in performing his duties.
It also said that all circle officers will lead the overall leadership of this committee. If necessary, the LTU will take advice from the VAT Commissioner. The committee will conduct raids on its own initiative by secretly collecting information and conducting raids on daily markets, localities, local warehouses and potential and suspicious places.
The divisional officer will gather data and information from all of his contacts, confirm the quantity, quality, and activities completed, and then forward it to the commissioner along with his assessment. After coordinating the data and information received, the commissioner will send the most qualified officer to the National Board of Revenue based on the total activities.
Additionally, it was announced that the National Board of Revenue would award a “certificate of recognition” to the top circle officer nationwide who is driven to stop the sale of illicit tobacco products.
