Myanmar has communicated its intent to repatriate roughly 100 Border Guard Police (BGP) personnel who fled across the border seeking refuge in Bangladesh, following clashes with the Arakan Army, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud announced on Monday.
Nearly 100 Myanmar BGP members entered Bangladesh, escaping ongoing fighting in their home country. Myanmar’s ambassador and deputy foreign minister confirmed their intention to take back the personnel.
Discussions are underway regarding whether they will be repatriated by air or land. Myanmar previously retrieved security forces who fled into India via air travel. Ongoing conflict: This incident unfolds amidst intensified clashes between the Myanmar military and ethnic rebel groups.
Foreign Minister said, “How they will be taken back — whether by air or road — is now being discussed. We will also send them back,” Minister Mahmud declared, referencing Myanmar’s prior repatriation efforts with India.
The Minister confirmed 95 BGP members had entered Bangladesh, with a few potential additional arrivals that morning. Some sustained injuries during the escape.
This incident highlights the regional security concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in Myanmar and the potential impact on bordering nations like Bangladesh.
