Diplomatic Correspondent: The government of Bangladesh has appointed Md. Nazrul Islam, at present Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar, as the new Ambassador of Bangladesh Russia .
Ambassador Nazrul Islam is a career foreign service officer belonging to the 15th batch of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Foreign Affairs cadre.
He is currently serving as Ambassador of Bangladesh to Ethiopia with concurrent accreditation to Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi and African Union (AU).
In his distinguished diplomatic career, Islam also served in different capacities at Bangladesh Missions in Rome, Kolkata and Geneva and had been engaged in many important multilateral negotiations for the government.
At the headquarters, he worked in various capacities in different wings.
Islam obtained his Masters in International Relations from Dhaka University and had undergone higher studies and trainings in France, the Netherlands and elsewhere
Meanwhile, the government has appointed Nahida Sobhan, at present Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada, as the Bangladesh Permanent Representative to Geneva, sources in Dhaka, Geneva and Ottawa said
Nahida Sobhan, High Commissioner to Canada, joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in 1995 as part of the 15th batch of the BCS (Foreign Affairs). Throughout her career, she has held various diplomatic positions, including serving as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Jordan, where she became the first Bangladeshi female ambassador to the Middle East. She has also served at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission in Geneva, the Bangladesh Embassy in Rome, and the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. Ms. Sobhan has extensive expertise in migration and human rights issues.
Nahida Sobhan holds both an MA and a BA in English Literature from the University of Dhaka. She has undergone various diplomatic training, including the Diplôme de Relation Internationale at IIAP, Paris, France (1998-99), and the Summer Course on Public International Law at the Peace Palace, The Hague (1999). She is fluent in Bengali and English and proficient in French. She is married and has two children.

Prior to becoming Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Islamic Republic of Iran, Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury served Ambassador of Bangladesh to Myanmar from March 2018 to April 2023.
He served as the Director General of South East Asia Wing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh from August 2015 to February 2018.
He had been the Consul General of Bangladesh in Istanbul, Turkey from December 2012 to July 2015.
A career Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury served at the Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam, Bangladesh Embassy in Rome, Italy and Bangladesh High Commission in London, United Kingdom at different capacities.
He also served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Dhaka as Director (Europe and EU wing) and as Assistant Secretary in different wings.
Ambassador Chowdhury holds BSc Engineering degree from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and Master degree in Geopolitics and Global Security degree from the University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy. He also studied Italian language and Culture at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia, Italy and participated in the course on International Law at the University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy. He did Chevening Fellowship on Peacekeeping and International Capacity Building at the University of Bradford, UK.
During his professional career, Ambassador Chowdhury participated in many professional training courses, seminars and conferences.
He is married to Farzana Nasrin, and they have two children.
Meanwhile, Tareq Md Ariful Islam, currently Bangladesh Permanent Representative to Geneva, has been tipped as the next Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA, sources in Dhaka, Washington and Geneva said
Tareq Md Ariful Islam joined Bangladesh Permanent Representative to Geneva in August 2024. Prior to taking up the current post, he was the High Commissioner for Bangladesh to Sri Lanka from 2020.
Islam is a career diplomat and joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1998. He was the Deputy Permanent Representative in the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York from 2016 to 2020. As for his other assignments abroad, he had another stint (2005-2009) in the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York as First Secretary/Counsellor. He then served in the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, India (2009-2012) as Counsellor.
He also served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh as Director-General (South Asia) and before that in various other capacities, including as Director (South Asia), Director (Foreign Minister’s Office) and in the Personnel Wing and the Foreign Secretary’s Office.
Islam takes special interest in the areas of international peace and security, regional cooperation, human rights and migration.
Islam holds a Master of Diplomacy and Trade from the Monash University, Australia and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Mr. Islam is married to Aliya Najma Nur. They have two daughters.
Meanwhile, the government of Bangladesh is likely to appoint former Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin as the next Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada soon, sources in Dhaka and Ottawa said.
A career diplomat, Jashim joined Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1994.
Jashim, from the 13th batch of BCS (Foreign Affairs) Cadre, served extensively both at home and abroad.
Prior to his appointment as new high commissioner to Canada, the government in September, 2024 appointed Md Jashim Uddin as the 27th foreign secretary of Bangladesh
He was serving as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China with concurrent accreditation to Mongolia, reports UNB.
He also served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Qatar from 2020 to 2022 and as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic (Greece) with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Malta and Republic of Armenia from 2015 to 2020.
Jashim Uddin’s Ambassadorial assignments were preceded by stints as Deputy High Commissioner at the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad from 2012 to 2013; as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC from 2008 to 2012; as Counsellor at Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo from 2003 to 2005; and as First Secretary and Counselor at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi from 2000 to 2003.
In between, he also served at the headquarters in different capacities. From 2013 to 2015, he was Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka in charge of South Asia as well as the East Asia and Pacific Wings. From 2005 to 2008, he was Director in charge of South Asia in Dhaka.
A student of International Relations, Ambassador Md. Jashim Uddin did both his Bachelor’s and Master’s from University of Dhaka.
Later on, he obtained an MA Degree in Modern International Studies from University of Leeds, UK. He also attended a yearlong course at the National Defence College in Dhaka.
On September 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs bid farewell to immediate past Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, though his contractual appointment was scheduled to end in December in 2024.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossan and senior officials of the ministry were present at the ceremony.
Masud Momen’s contractual appointment was cancelled a day after his formal farewell.
The previous government extended the tenure of Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen by two more years under a contractual appointment effective from December 6, 2022 or from the date of his joining.
