Malaysia agrees to recruit ‘huge number’ of Bangladeshi workers

B Mirror Desk : Malaysia has reached a preliminary agreement to hire a substantial number of Bangladeshi workers in the upcoming years, ensuring their wages, safety, and overall well-being, as stated by officials from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.

This development occurred during a joint meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, between Asif Nazrul, adviser to the Ministry, and senior officials from Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources. Discussions focused on two main issues: guaranteeing the salaries and benefits of Bangladeshi workers currently in Malaysia and establishing a more transparent and ethical recruitment process for new workers.

A senior ministry source informed Media that there were extensive discussions about recruiting a significant number of workers from Bangladesh to meet the demands of Malaysian employers while safeguarding migrant rights. Malaysia is anticipated to welcome several hundred thousand workers over the next few years, with over 20,000 expected to be recruited at no cost to the migrants, according to ministry sources.

Asif Nazrul, along with Senior Secretary Neyamat Ullah Bhuiyan and Deputy Secretary Md Sarwar Alam, arrived in Malaysia on May 14 for an official visit. The delegation has been in talks with key Malaysian authorities to revitalize and stabilize the labor market between the two nations. Sarwar Alam confirmed the positive outcome of today’s discussions with Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources, stating that a favorable decision regarding the opening of the Malaysian labor market is expected to be finalized during a joint working committee meeting on May 21 in Dhaka.

Concerning the regularization of undocumented workers in Malaysia, he stated, “We are optimistic about this and a meeting with the Home Ministry of Malaysia is set to take place this evening.” Officials from the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia pointed out that the salary rates for general workers in Malaysia are almost twice as high as those in the Middle East. A high commission official, who wished to remain anonymous, remarked, “If managed effectively, this labor market could greatly enhance our remittance inflow and positively impact the national economy.

“However, both the delegation and local officials recognized the intricate tensions within the recruitment sector, especially regarding conflicts among Bangladeshi recruiting agencies. These disputes have reportedly hindered the growth of the labor market, although recent initiatives by both governments are aimed at overcoming these obstacles. A senior official at the ministry emphasized, “It is crucial to prioritize the interests of migrant workers over the business interests of agencies. A transparent and legal migration process will benefit both the workers and the nation.” Officials reiterated that the government cannot assign recruitment contracts to specific agencies. “It is the responsibility of the agencies to secure overseas jobs. Once they do, the government will approve the sending of workers.

This is the standard procedure in every country,” one official explained. They also cautioned that politically motivated protests, media campaigns, and lawsuits from certain business groups are damaging Bangladesh’s reputation. “Legal cases filed under human trafficking and money laundering laws — even after lawful migration — are attracting negative attention from destination countries,” a source revealed. “Receiving nations are closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. Unwarranted legal actions following legitimate migration create a misleading impression and undermine our diplomatic efforts,” the official added. In light of global economic challenges and the national necessity for a consistent flow of remittances, policymakers underscored the importance of swiftly resolving disputes.
