Low-income people returning to Dhaka in cargo trucks with risks

BM Desk : After the long holiday of Eid-ul-Fitr, low-income people have started returning to the capital Dhaka in cargo trucks and pickup vans. Most of them are garment workers and daily wage laborers.

On Saturday night at 12:45, a cargo truck arrived in Gabtoli. At least 15 people were on the sacks.

One of them was Shakib Hasan. His wife and brother-in-law were with him.

Shakib said that he lives in a rented house in Mirpur Section 13 area. He works in a garment factory there. His home is in Bogra city.

‘The factory is opening on Monday. This time it was a long holiday, I went home after closing the house, I had to clean the house and the tarpaulin. So I returned a day early,’ he said.

Shakib also said, ‘I spent more than I expected when I went home. On the way back, the bus fare was 800 taka per person. I had to return within 1500 taka. I returned for 900 taka in the potato truck, 300 taka per person.’

Garment worker Kohinur Begum returned with her husband in the same truck. She said, “There are risks in the truck. Going home for Eid incurs additional expenses. I work in a garment factory, my husband works in a shop. The money I get is not enough. I come by truck to save a little.”

Truck driver Abdul Malek said that he will go to Karwan Bazar with potatoes. He earned an additional 4,500 taka with 15 passengers on the way.

“The cost of fuel has gone up,” he said.

In addition to trucks, many people are returning by pickup van. Majnu Mia, a passenger of the pickup van, lives in the Bhasantek area of Dhaka.
