B Mirror Report: The Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association has demanded a complete ban on the export of raw jute. The association submitted an application to the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Textiles and Jute last Thursday.
On Sunday, a delegation of the association met Sheikh Bashiruddin. He is the Advisor to the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Textiles and Jute. The meeting focused on the export of raw jute.
The association said high prices and a supply shortage have created a crisis. Jute mills are failing to procure raw jute as per demand. Many mills may shut down soon. The association warned this poses a serious threat to the country’s jute industry. It urged the government to withdraw the raw jute export order immediately.
According to the association, raw jute production was lower last year. Natural disasters were cited as a key reason. In September, the government allowed the export of raw jute under certain conditions. Supply improved temporarily. However, prices remain high. Raw jute is now selling between Tk 4,700 and Tk 5,000 per maund.
