Imran, Jhenaidah Correspondent: A human chain and road blockade were held in Jhenaidah demanding fair compensation for landowners and businesspeople affected by the expansion of the Jhenaidah-Jashore highway into six lanes.
On Wednesday morning, the affected parties organized the program at the main bus stand of Kaliganj upazila town. Locals, business owners, and people from various professions joined the protest carrying banners and placards.
During the human chain, landowners Alhaj Shahidul Islam, Badruzzaman, Dr. Zahurul Islam, Anwar, and others addressed the gathering. Speakers alleged that compensation is being calculated based on outdated 2022 mouza (land survey) values. Land currently worth Tk 1 million (10 lakh) is being compensated at just Tk 200,000 (2 lakh). They also claimed that in many cases, only partial compensation is being offered for houses and business establishments instead of full value.
Following the human chain, the Jhenaidah-Jashore highway was blocked, halting traffic on routes toward Jashore, Kushtia, and Chuadanga. After about an hour, the blockade was lifted with a warning of further protests if demands are not met.
