IOM report: rising remittances, displacements reshape global migration landscape

BMirror Desk:

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) unveiled its 2024 World Migration Report in Dhaka on Tuesday, highlighting significant shifts in global migration patterns. The report sheds light on a world with a growing number of international migrants and displaced people, alongside a surge in international remittances.

IOM Director General Amy Pope officially launched the report at a Dhaka event. Key findings reveal that Asia remains the primary source region for international migrants, with over 40% – or 115 million – originating from the continent in   2020.  Six Asian countries – India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, and Afghanistan – contribute nearly 20% of this total, with India being the single largest source nation.  Mexico and the Russian Federation follow as the second and third largest origin countries, respectively.

“The World Migration Report 2024 utilizes data and analysis to dispel myths surrounding human mobility,” stated Pope.  The report emphasizes the positive influence of migration on human development and economic growth.  This is substantiated by a staggering 650% increase in international remittances from 2000 to 2022, rising from $128 billion to a staggering $831 billion.  This growth defied  predictions of a decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Significantly, $647 billion of these remittances flowed to low-and middle-income countries.

The report also paints a concerning picture of global displacement.  The number of individuals displaced due to conflict, violence, disasters, and other factors has reached a record high of 117 million.  This pressing issue underscores the urgent need for solutions to displacement crises.

The selection of Dhaka as the launch venue signifies more than just the report’s release.  It acknowledges Bangladesh’s efforts in supporting vulnerable migrants and establishing pathways for regular migration.  Furthermore, it recognizes the nation’s growing role in shaping global migration discourse and policy.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud commented, “As a champion country for the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), Bangladesh remains committed to fulfilling its domestic pledges.  We will also address emerging challenges and issues related to migration and development, fostering informed discussions at the international level.”

The IOM’s World Migration Report offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of global migration.  With a growing number of migrants and displaced people, alongside the crucial role of remittances, the report underscores the need for effective policies and international cooperation to address contemporary migration challenges and opportunities.
