IMF conditions not fully suitable for Bangladesh’s economy: FM

B Mirror Report: Finance Minister Amir Khusru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that not all conditions imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under its loan assistance program are suitable for Bangladesh’s economy and its people.

He made the remarks on Monday night at a discussion event held at a hotel in the capital.

The finance minister said that as an elected government, the administration is accountable to the people, and therefore it cannot implement all recommendations or conditions of development partners without considering national interests.

He added that government policy-making and reform initiatives will be carried out in line with the electoral manifesto, and any necessary adjustments will remain within that framework.

“There are areas where we do not fully agree. We have differences with the IMF in several aspects because some of their conditions are not suitable for our economy or our people,” he said.

Regarding development partners, the minister noted that most share policy alignment with the government’s election commitments. Based on that coordination, economic policies and reforms are being implemented.

He further emphasized that while cooperation with international institutions continues, policy decisions will prioritize national needs and public interest.
