Govt’s main goal to ensure public welfare: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said improving people’s quality of life and changing their fortunes are the government’s primary objectives, stressing that his administration is working to transform Bangladesh into a welfare-oriented state.

He made the remarks on Sunday while addressing a programme marking the release of fish fry into the Old Brahmaputra River in Pakundia, Kishoreganj, where he attended the event as the chief guest.

The prime minister said the government was implementing various programmes and plans with a focus on ensuring that people benefit directly from development initiatives.

He said the government had undertaken a phased programme to release fish fry into canals and water bodies across the country to increase fish production and make fish more affordable for ordinary people.

The government will also continue providing necessary support to ensure sustainable agricultural development and protect the interests of farmers, he added.

Tarique Rahman also highlighted several government initiatives aimed at expanding educational opportunities for women and disadvantaged students. He said steps would be taken to make female education free up to the undergraduate level and introduce special scholarships for meritorious female students.

He further said the government had decided to distribute free clothing and schoolbags among 120,000 disadvantaged primary-level students.

Referring to the country’s recent political and economic situation, the prime minister said the public was now bearing the consequences of crises in the power and energy sectors created by various unplanned measures taken by the previous government.

He said the fall of what he described as fascism had opened a new path of possibilities for the people of Bangladesh. Now, he called on everyone to maintain peace and stability and work together to rebuild the country.

The prime minister also warned that attempts to create political instability, spread confusion among the people or obstruct national development would not be tolerated.

Those involved in such activities would face strict legal and social measures, he said.
