Former BSEC chairman Shibli Rubaiyat arrested

The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam, the former chairman of the stock market regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).

He was arrested from the capital’s Dhanmondi area around 10pm on Tuesday (February 4), DB chief Rezaul Karim Mallick confirmed.

He said he was arrested from the capital’s Dhanmondi area around 10pm today. He was arrested in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The Home Ministry recently revoked his passport on charges of aiding in the looting of the stock market while he was in charge of BSEC.

Shibli Rubaiyat, a professor at the Department of Banking and Insurance at Dhaka University, first took over as BSEC chairman on May 17, 2020. He took over as BSEC chairman again on May 16 last year after being reappointed.

Shibli Rubaiyat resigned from the post of BSEC chairman on August 10 last year after the Awami League government fell in a student uprising. He then returned to his department at Dhaka University.
