Concerns have been raised regarding the arbitrary cases filed in the aftermath of the anti-discrimination student movement. Many individuals are being indiscriminately accused without due diligence, while certain groups have exploited the situation for financial gain. Business leaders are reportedly being targeted for large sums of money to avoid being implicated in these cases, with accusations often levied against teachers, journalists, and celebrities as well. Allegations suggest that political rivals are using these cases as tools for revenge, with many complainants being unfamiliar with the accused.
Senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna criticized the validity of such cases, arguing that they undermine the chances for genuine victims to receive justice and allow real offenders to evade accountability. He noted that the absurdity of including individuals from outside Dhaka in these cases indicates a scripted approach, aiming solely to harass and intimidate. Recently, a prominent business group faced extortion attempts, with threats of being implicated in cases if they refused to pay substantial sums. As a result, a climate of fear has emerged among businesspeople and ordinary citizens, leading to widespread anxiety and dislocation.
Police officials have acknowledged the presence of fraudulent schemes involving these arbitrary cases, confirming that innocent individuals are being targeted. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner stated that they are vigilant against such scammers, noting that they are investigating several murder cases stemming from the violence during the student protests. He emphasized that being named in a case does not automatically warrant arrest, and investigations will determine the involvement of the accused.
Concerns have also been voiced by various political figures regarding the high number of frivolous cases filed following the student protests. Recent remarks from advisors to the interim government and politicians indicate a shared sentiment that the culture of filing such cases must be eradicated. They have urged law enforcement to prioritize specific allegations and to ensure that innocent citizens are not subjected to harassment.
