EU Garment Exports Dip as U.S. Demand Climbs

Overall ready-made clothing exports to the European Union (EU) and new markets decreased over the first five months (July–November) of the current fiscal year 2025–2026, while exports to the US grew.

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) released a report on the condition of clothing exports that included this information.

According to the report, garment exports to various global markets during July–November of the current year amounted to USD 16.13 billion. In the same period last year, exports stood at USD 16.11 billion. Year-on-year, exports increased by 0.09 percent. Of this, garment exports to the European Union during July–November of the current fiscal year totaled USD 7.83 billion, compared to USD 7.91 billion in the same period last year. As a result, garment exports to the EU declined by 1.03 percent during the period under review.

On the other hand, during the same period Bangladesh exported garments worth USD 1.84 billion to the United States, its second-largest market. In the corresponding period last year, exports amounted to USD 1.79 billion. Thus, garment exports to the US market increased by 3.06 percent.

Meanwhile, ready-made garment exports to non-traditional or new markets declined. These markets include Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, and other countries including the United Arab Emirates.

Garment exports to new markets during July–November of the current fiscal year amounted to USD 2.67 billion, compared to USD 2.75 billion in the same period last year. In the first five months, exports to non-traditional markets fell by 3.19 percent.

According to EPB data, total merchandise exports during the first five months of the current fiscal year reached USD 20.03 billion overall. This represents a 0.62 percent increase compared to the same period last year, when exports totaled USD 19.91 billion.
