Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) is increasingly relying on investment and other income to sustain profits as earnings from its core lending business decline, an analysis of its 2025 financial statements shows.
The bank’s net interest income fell 7% year-on-year to Tk 983.30 crore in 2025, from Tk 1,058.51 crore in 2024. Meanwhile, its investment rose sharply by 48% to Tk 21,147.31 crore, driving investment income up 43% to Tk 1,453.05 crore.
EBL’s net profit nevertheless increased 20% to Tk 900.98 crore in 2025 from Tk 750.39 crore a year earlier.
However, the bank’s total operating expenses stood at Tk 1,250.40 crore, including Tk 768.22 crore in employee salaries and benefits, while loan provisioning expenses added another Tk 435.68 crore.
Over the past five years, EBL’s deposits increased 130% to Tk 55,645.40 crore, while loans grew 75% to Tk 37,444.17 crore. In contrast, investments surged 231%, reaching Tk 21,147.31 crore in 2025.
The figures indicate that the bank’s recent profit growth has been driven increasingly by investments and non-interest income rather than its core lending business.
