Bangladesh’s stock market extended its losing streak for the fifth consecutive trading session on Tuesday, with the benchmark DSEX losing another 40 points amid heavy selling pressure.
The DSEX closed at 5,773 points, taking its five-day decline to 130 points. The DSE-30 index fell 11 points to 2,164, while the DSES declined 7 points to 1,150.
Selling pressure intensified after noon, particularly in insurance stocks, before spreading across other sectors. Of the 390 issues traded on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), 266 declined, 77 advanced and 47 remained unchanged.
Despite the sharp fall in indices, turnover increased slightly to Tk 998.10 crore, compared with Tk 994.85 crore in the previous session.
Dominage Steel Building led the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 52.75 crore changing hands, followed by IPDC Finance at Tk 51.66 crore and Envoy Textiles at Tk 29.87 crore.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also witnessed a significant decline. Its benchmark CASPI fell 110 points, while turnover dropped to Tk 73.22 crore from Tk 105.26 crore a day earlier.
The continued decline has raised fresh concerns over investor confidence despite a series of government and regulatory initiatives aimed at revitalising the capital market.
Market observers said policy announcements alone may not be enough to reverse the downturn. They stressed effective implementation of reforms, market stability and consistent positive measures to restore investor confidence.
