Questions have emerged over the formation of the Dhaka Stock Exchange’s (DSE) Workers’ Profit Participation Fund (WPPF), as the exchange allocated Tk 32.33 crore to the fund over six years despite reporting operating losses.
In FY2024-25, DSE allocated Tk 3.42 crore to the fund while recording an operating loss of Tk 49.43 crore. Its operating income stood at Tk 101.03 crore against expenses of Tk 150.46 crore. However, it posted a net profit of Tk 31.19 crore, mainly supported by interest income from fixed deposits and government securities.
Finance experts and DSE stakeholders have questioned the legality and justification of forming the fund based on interest income rather than operating profits, arguing that the practice could undermine shareholders’ interests.
During FY2024-25, DSE earned Tk 94.11 crore in interest from fixed deposits and treasury securities. Its retained earnings stood at Tk 74.98 crore, while earnings per share were Tk 0.17. The exchange distributed a 1.70 per cent dividend to shareholders.
