B MirrorDesk: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin stated that the registration of the Awami League will be determined only after the publication of the official gazette. He communicated this to the press on Sunday, May 11.
The CEC emphasized that discussions with the Election Commission will follow the gazette’s release. He noted that any decision will be made post-discussion with the commission, as it is essential to grasp the current sentiments of Bangladesh.
Previously, on May 10, the Advisory Council convened an urgent meeting in response to public and student protests calling for a prohibition on Awami League activities. Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul announced at a press conference that the council resolved to suspend all Awami League operations. He mentioned that a special meeting was held to enforce a ban on all Awami League activities, including online platforms, under the Anti-Terrorism Act, until the International Crimes Tribunal concludes its proceedings against the party and its leaders. This measure aims to safeguard the nation’s security, the safety of July Movement leaders and activists, and the protection of plaintiffs and witnesses involved in the tribunal. Notably, on May 7, former President Abdul Hamid of the ousted Awami League government discreetly traveled to Thailand.
Following this revelation, the National Citizens Party (NCP) initiated a new campaign, garnering support from various organizations and parties. Additionally, protests erupted across the country, including in the capital, demanding the enforcement of three key demands, one of which is the prohibition of the Awami League.
