Customs official dismissed for absconding abroad

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has dismissed Deputy Commissioner of Customs and Excise Md. Shahiduzzaman Sarker from service after he allegedly failed to return to Bangladesh from Belgium, where he had travelled under the guise of a training assignment.

According to an official notification signed by Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, Secretary of the Internal Resources Division and Chairman of the NBR, the customs official remained abroad after being sent to Belgium as a manager of a project under the World Customs Organization (WCO).

NBR sources said Shahiduzzaman was initially suspended on November 3, 2025. Following his suspension, a departmental case was filed in accordance with government regulations.

After an investigation, authorities found him guilty of “misconduct” and “absconding” under Rules 3(b), 3(g), and 4(3) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.

The investigation report concluded that Shahiduzzaman was responsible for the allegations brought against him. The authorities subsequently issued him two separate show-cause notices, asking why he should not be dismissed from service. However, he failed to provide satisfactory explanations in response.

As a result, the NBR decided to dismiss him from government service, according to the official notification.
