CA Calls for Closer Bangladesh-Azerbaijan Collaboration

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has highlighted Bangladesh’s strong desire to enhance bilateral ties with Azerbaijan by improving connectivity, boosting trade, and fostering educational exchanges.

In a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elnur Mammadov, at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday afternoon, the Chief Adviser stressed the importance of establishing a direct flight between Dhaka and Baku and advocated for the establishment of an Azerbaijani embassy in Dhaka.

He remarked that these initiatives would not only promote student exchanges but also strengthen business collaboration. ‘For Bangladeshi students, Azerbaijan still seems like a remote destination,’ Professor Yunus stated. ‘A direct flight would facilitate easier access for students studying energy in Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijani students could gain from Bangladesh’s expertise in the textile industry.’ The Chief Adviser emphasized that the creation of an Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Dhaka would resolve visa-related issues and foster a closer relationship. ‘Your presence in Bangladesh is vital for cultivating stronger connections,’ he noted.

The discussions encompassed various areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, energy, education, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchange. Professor Yunus reminisced about his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during the COP29 summit in Baku last November and congratulated Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the global climate event.

He also expressed his appreciation to President Aliyev for sending a high-level delegation to Bangladesh, as agreed upon during their previous discussions. Emphasizing Bangladesh’s demographic advantage, Professor Yunus encouraged Azerbaijani investors to consider opportunities in the country. ‘With a population nearing 180 million, half of whom are young, we can provide a skilled workforce for any industrial project,’ he remarked.

Deputy Minister Mammadov articulated Azerbaijan’s commitment to enhancing strategic relations with Bangladesh, especially as both countries prepare to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2027. He remarked, ‘We are here to fortify our partnership.

He also provided insights into Azerbaijan’s ASAN and DOST service models, aimed at increasing transparency, reducing corruption, and improving public service delivery. The Chief Adviser expressed appreciation for these innovations and showed interest in implementing similar systems in Bangladesh.

At the end of the meeting, Deputy Minister Mammadov extended a formal invitation from President Aliyev to Professor Yunus to participate in the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), which is set to take place in Azerbaijan in July 2025.
