B Mirror Desk : In a departure from established norms, the interim government has opted to unveil the national budget on June 2. This decision was reached during a meeting of the Coordination Council on Financial, Monetary and Exchange Rate Affairs, along with the Asset Management Committee, which took place at the Secretariat on Tuesday. The meeting was led by finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, as reported by attendees.
This budget will be presented by the interim government under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus. Typically, Bangladesh’s budget is introduced in parliament on a Thursday in June each fiscal year; however, the budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year is set to be announced on a Monday.
The proposed budget is expected to total Tk 7.9 trillion (790,000 crore) and will be revealed prior to the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, which are anticipated to commence in the second week of June. In line with tradition, the finance adviser will conduct a press conference the day after the budget announcement, as confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Finance.
The original budget for the current fiscal year (2024-25) was Tk 7.97 trillion, suggesting that the forthcoming budget may be roughly Tk 70 billion (7,000 crore) less than that of the current year. With no national parliament in session, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed will present the upcoming budget through a televised address, and it will be enacted via a Presidential Ordinance. Normally, finance ministers from political governments present the budget in parliament; however, this year’s absence of a political administration necessitates a different approach.
