BTMA lauds US tariff reduction efforts

The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has praised the recent achievement in tariff reduction during an official visit to Washington, DC, describing it as a major advancement for the nation’s textile sector.

The delegation, headed by President Showkat Aziz Russell, expressed gratitude to Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin and his team for their work in obtaining a significant decrease in US tariffs on RMG exports.

This achievement signifies a vital breakthrough for Bangladesh’s export competitiveness and its bilateral trade relations with the United States, according to a press release.

During the high-level visit, BTMA member mills reiterated their dedication to strengthening commercial relations with the US by committing to substantial imports of American cotton.

The mills involved include: Mosharaf Composite Textile Mills Ltd, represented by Mosharaf Hossain, Asia Composite Mills Ltd, represented by Masud Rana, and Salma Group, represented by Chowdhury Md Hanif Shoeb and Salma Chowdhury.

The meeting was attended by National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, along with senior government officials such as Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman and Additional Secretary (WTO Wing) of the Ministry of Commerce Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury.

An evening reception was organized by DM Salahuddin Mahmud, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Washington, D.C.

Earlier that day, the delegation participated in discussions with the president of the US Chamber of Commerce and representatives from leading American business organizations.

The meeting also included former US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas.

During the discussions, American business leaders showed significant interest in enhancing trade and investment with Bangladesh.

The adviser assured US counterparts of the full support from the government of Bangladesh in creating a favorable environment for mutual growth and collaboration.
