BGMEA seeks customs bank services during Eid holidays

B Mirror Report: The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the government to keep customs houses, customs stations, and related bank branches open during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays, excluding Eid day, to ensure uninterrupted export operations.

In a letter sent recently to National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan requested that Chattogram Custom House and other customs facilities across the country remain operational during government and weekly holidays from May 25 to May 31.

The letter stated that the readymade garment (RMG) industry is highly fashion- and time-sensitive, making timely shipment of export orders within the specified lead time crucial.

“If export shipments are delayed, there is a risk of order cancellations, causing significant financial losses for exporters and depriving the country of valuable foreign currency earnings,” the BGMEA president said in the letter.

BGMEA also noted that the garment sector is currently facing multiple challenges amid ongoing global economic instability. Under such circumstances, uninterrupted support from ports, customs authorities, banks, the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), and other related institutions is essential to maintain export activities.

The association emphasized that keeping customs offices and related bank branches open during the Eid holidays would help ensure timely shipment of ongoing export orders and support the country’s export earnings.
