Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury has highlighted Bangladesh’s commitment to global environmental protection by promoting eco-friendly and biodegradable jute products worldwide, including in Bhutan, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bangladesh Jute Products Exhibition Centre in Thimphu, Bhutan, on Monday evening, Chowdhury emphasized the government’s initiatives to expand the reach of Bangladeshi jute products. Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay inaugurated the event, organized by the Bangladesh Embassy in Thimphu.
Chowdhury noted that establishing the exhibition centre will strengthen Bhutan-Bangladesh relations, contribute to environmental protection, and enhance bilateral trade. The event saw the presence of Bhutan’s foreign minister, minister of Industry, Commerce and Employment, minister of Health, minister of Power and Natural Resources, foreign secretary, and other senior officials.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Bhutan Shib Nath Roy and Embassy Counsellor Sujan Debnath, along with leaders from the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and numerous Bhutanese businessmen, importers, and handicraft traders, also attended the event.
After the inauguration, Bhutanese leaders and businessmen toured the exhibition centre and admired the versatile range of Bangladeshi jute products, including jute bags, shoes, carpets, tissue boxes, kitchen items, clothing, office files, conference files, pen holders, and home furnishings. They expressed hope for the development of a permanent market for these products in Bhutan.
Embassy sources indicated that the variety and quantity of jute products would increase in the near future, paving the way for Bangladeshi jute products to gain a foothold in various Bhutanese cities.
