Ramadan, the holy month, has begun. Beginning on the first day of this month, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) will launch an anti-adulteration campaign. Three mobile courts will be run daily throughout the capital as part of this initiative, along with one at the district and upazila levels.
Adilur Rahman Khan, the interim government’s Industry Advisor, provided this information during a press conference on Wednesday, February 26.
During the drive, he said, coordination will be done with the Food Safety Authority and the Consumer Rights Authority.
The Industry Advisor said that BSTI collected 737 samples of iftar and sehri from open markets in the past few days. Out of these, 559 samples were tested and 47 substandard products were found from them. The list of these substandard products includes animal ghee, fruit drinks, salt, mustard oil, muri, laccha semai and spices.
He also said that 471 mobile courts have been operated in the last four months. 428 cases have been filed and three people have been sentenced to prison. 23 establishments have been sealed simultaneously.
The industrial advisor also commented that the operation will play an important role in ensuring safe food for the country’s consumers.
