Nurul Amin Khan Sylhet Bureau Chief: Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, president of Sylhet District BNP, has officially taken charge as the newly appointed administrator of Sylhet City Corporation.
On Tuesday, February 24, Chowdhury, along with administrators of other city corporations, received the formal handover of responsibilities from the Minister of Local Government and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. A brief ceremony and exchange of greetings were held at the ministry on the occasion.
Earlier, on Sunday, February 22, the Local Government Division (City Corporation-1 Branch) of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued a notification appointing six full-time administrators, including Chowdhury, for Sylhet and five other city corporations.
Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury has been a prominent political leader and social organizer in Sylhet, leading protests against the Awami League government and working through student and youth wings to strengthen BNP’s organization and unity. He gained recognition for supporting BNP activists during government crackdowns in the previous Awami League tenure and for coordinating extensive relief efforts during floods and the COVID-19 pandemic in Sylhet.
Chowdhury had also been a BNP aspirant for the Sylhet-3 constituency (Dakshin Surma, Fenchuganj, and Balaganj) in the 13th national parliamentary elections. Although many expected him to receive the party nomination due to his long-standing loyalty and dedication, the BNP instead nominated former UK BNP president M.A. Malik for the seat. Malik returned to Bangladesh last year, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, after 19 years, to pursue the nomination.
