Probe reveals Ayaan’s asthma history was undisclosed to doctors during circumcision, intensifying negligence concerns
BM Report:
In a significant move, the High Court has instructed the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to furnish a comprehensive list of patients who lost their lives due to negligence at the United Medical College and Hospital, operated by United Group, in the past 15 years.
The HC bench, led by Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah, issued this directive and further demanded the DGHS to submit an affidavit-form probe report on the tragic demise of five-year-old Ayaan Ahmed within three months.
Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy represented the state, while Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akanda Masum stood for the petitioner.
Earlier, on January 15, the HC had directed authorities to provide a detailed list of patients who succumbed to negligence at the hospital situated in Satarkul, Badda.
Alongside, it initiated a rule asking the government to elucidate why Ayaan’s family should not receive Tk 5 crore as compensation.
The HC had also called for the submission of the probe report within seven days, and another list detailing unauthorized hospitals and clinics nationwide in one month.
Responding to the HC’s order, Deputy Director (Law) Dr. Parimal Kumar Pal, on behalf of the Director General of DGHS, presented the probe report. According to the findings, Ayaan suffered from childhood asthma, a crucial detail not communicated to the physicians during his circumcision.
Additionally, the report highlighted excessive bleeding during the operation.
The next hearing is scheduled for Monday, and the HC has maintained a firm stance on addressing negligence concerns at United Hospital.
On January 8, Ayaan tragically passed away following a circumcision procedure at the United Medical College and Hospital. His life support lasted seven days after the circumcision.
Subsequently, on January 9, Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akanda Masum filed a writ petition with the High Court, seeking compensation for Ayaan’s demise and advocating for punitive measures against the involved physicians and hospital authorities.
