RESILIENT AND REWARDING 30 YEARS OF CPD

Bangladesh Think Tank Marks Milestone Amid Complex Realities

BM Desk:

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a leading Bangladeshi think tank, has marked its 30th anniversary amid complex realities, including the post-COVID world, economic stress, and geopolitical tensions. Despite these challenges, CPD has remained resilient and rewarding, making significant contributions to policy analysis and advocacy in Bangladesh.

In 2023, Bangladesh faced economic challenges such as high inflation, exchange rate volatility, and a weak banking sector. The political situation also heated up in the run-up to the upcoming national elections.

CPD researchers responded to these challenges by analyzing the macroeconomic situation and making concrete policy recommendations to the government. They also engaged in public discussions through dialogues and media briefings to raise awareness about critical issues.

Key areas of focus for CPD in 2023 included: Public finance management; Fiscal and taxation issues;  LDC graduation; Regional cooperation; Power and energy; Climate change and environment; Greening the textile industry; Minimum wage for garment workers; Workplace safety; Finance for women’s empowerment; Business environment; and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of CPD’s major achievements in 2023 was the organization of the Fourteenth South Asian Economic Summit (SAES XIV) in December. The summit, themed “Reframing South Asian Regional Cooperation in the New Context: National and Global Dimensions,” brought together 70 panelists and 600 participants from across South Asia to discuss regional economic cooperation and integration.

2023 marked a special milestone for CPD as it celebrated its 30th anniversary. The think tank’s resilience and commitment to knowledge generation, advocacy, and social justice have been key to its success.

“This milestone stands as a testament to the resilience of the think tank which is committed to generate knowledge, strengthen people’s voice and challenge injustice,” said Dr. Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of CPD.

As CPD enters its 31st year, it remains committed to its mission of strengthening policy analysis and advocacy in Bangladesh. The think tank looks forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders to address the country’s pressing challenges and ensure a more prosperous and equitable future for all.

CPD’s work is essential for ensuring that Bangladesh can navigate the complex realities of the 21st century and achieve its development goals. The think tank’s commitment to research, advocacy, and public engagement makes it a valuable resource for policymakers, civil society organizations, and the Bangladeshi people as a whole.
