The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) hosted a thought-provoking seminar titled “IPR Protection & Practices: Driving Economic Growth in Bangladesh” at the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka on Thursday. The event delved into the critical role of intellectual property rights (IPR) in fostering innovation and propelling economic development in Bangladesh.
Gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honor, Zakia Sultana, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening IPR protection. AmCham President Syed Ershad Ahmed presided over the panel discussion, emphasizing the importance of fostering a robust IPR framework for Bangladesh’s economic progress.
Joseph Giblin, Economic Unit Chief at the US Embassy in Dhaka, moderated the seminar, guiding engaging discussions among esteemed panelists. Barrister Hamidul Mishbah, renowned IP lawyer and founder of the Bangladesh IP Forum, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the significance of IPR protection for Bangladesh’s economic advancement.
The panel discussion featured a diverse array of experts: Hossain Ahmed, Member – Customs, Audit, Modernization and International Trade, NBR, Munim Hassan, Director General, Department of Patent, Industrial Design and Trademarks (DPDT), Shilpi Jha, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Senior Legal IP Counsel for South Asia.
A diverse audience, including AmCham members, executive committee members, former presidents, foreign dignitaries, business leaders, government officials from various ministries, media representatives, and other distinguished guests, engaged in lively discussions on strengthening IPR protection mechanisms. The seminar underscored the need for a robust IPR framework to stimulate innovation, attract foreign investment, and enhance Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global market.
In his closing remarks, AmCham Vice President Syed Mohammad Kamal expressed gratitude to the participants and panelists for their insightful contributions. He reaffirmed AmCham’s unwavering commitment to advocating for a strong IPR framework in Bangladesh, recognizing its potential to fuel the nation’s economic growth and prosperity.
