BB issues new currency notes with Governor’s signature

Bangladesh Bank has introduced banknotes bearing the signature of its Governor Mostaqur Rahman, who assumed office in February this year.

The newly printed notes were released on Monday and are initially available at the central bank’s Motijheel office before being distributed to commercial banks in phases, officials said.

According to Bangladesh Bank, the Tk 1,000, Tk 500 and Tk 10 denominations have been reprinted with the governor’s signature, while Tk 20, Tk 50 and Tk 100 notes will be issued subsequently.

The central bank clarified that only the governor’s signature has been changed, while the colour, size and security features of the notes remain unchanged. Denominations of Tk 1, Tk 2 and Tk 5 have not yet been reissued under the new design.

The update is part of a broader redesign of currency notes initiated after the political changes following the 2024 July uprising. Earlier, the interim government introduced redesigned notes under the theme “Historical and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh.”

Bangladesh Bank said the previous series featured the signature of former governor Ahsan H Mansur.
