B Mirror Report: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) recorded nearly 7.0 per cent year-on-year growth in tax collection in April, showing a slight improvement from March when growth had slowed to 2.67 per cent.
According to provisional data, the NBR collected Tk 390.59 billion in April. During the July-April period of FY26, total tax revenue reached Tk 3.26 trillion, posting nearly 11 per cent growth.
To meet its annual target of Tk 5.03 trillion, the revenue authority will need to collect around Tk 885 billion per month for the remainder of the fiscal year.
A recent study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) projected that the revenue shortfall could reach Tk 1.0 trillion this fiscal year.
Economists attributed the weak revenue performance to sluggish business activities, lower imports, high inflation and weak investment flows.
CPD Senior Research Fellow Towfiqul Islam Khan urged the government to adopt stronger tax reforms, reduce exemptions and recover arrears to narrow the growing revenue gap.
