Weekend demand pushes up chicken and egg prices

B Mirror Report: Prices of chicken and eggs have increased in Dhaka’s markets ahead of the weekend, while fish prices remain high due to supply shortages.

On Friday, broiler chicken was selling at Tk 200 per kg, while a dozen eggs were priced at Tk 150. Sonali chicken was selling between Tk 330 and Tk 350 per kg, while local chicken prices ranged from Tk 700 to Tk 800 per kg.

Market visits showed that Sonali chicken prices have increased from Tk 300–320 per kg last month to Tk 330–350 now. Local chicken prices have also risen from Tk 650–700 to Tk 750–800 per kg. Broiler chicken prices increased from Tk 170–175 to Tk 200 per kg.

Vendors said demand has increased while supply remains limited, especially ahead of the weekend when social events are more frequent.

Egg prices have also gone up compared to last week. A dozen eggs, previously sold at Tk 120, are now priced at Tk 150. Depending on size and type, eggs are selling between Tk 140 and Tk 160 per dozen.

Meanwhile, fish prices in Dhaka remain high, with most varieties priced above Tk 200 per kg. Pangas is selling at Tk 200, tilapia at Tk 230, rohu between Tk 300–350, mrigel Tk 250–300, and shrimp between Tk 900–1,100 per kg. Premium and river fish prices remain significantly higher.

Large-sized hilsa is reportedly selling above Tk 3,000 per kg, depending on weight. Traders also noted that river fish such as bele are selling at Tk 500 per kg and desi tengra at Tk 600 per kg.

Vendors blamed lower supply from rivers, adverse weather conditions, and increased transportation costs for the price hikes. Consumers expressed concern over rising prices, saying it is becoming difficult for middle- and low-income families to afford fish and protein sources.

Traders, however, expect prices to stabilize if supply improves in the coming days.
