B Mirror Report: The government has decided to import three cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from two countries at more than double the previous price amid the ongoing war situation in the Middle East. Of the total, two cargoes will be imported from South Korea and one from the United Kingdom. The total cost for importing the three LNG cargoes will be Tk 2,654 crore 54 lakh 63 thousand 280.
The proposal for importing the LNG was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday (March 11). The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, the convener of the committee.
According to meeting sources, a proposal from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division to purchase three LNG cargoes was presented outside the scheduled agenda. Following Rule 105(3)(a) of the Public Procurement Rules 2025, the LNG will be imported from the spot market through an international quotation collection process. One cargo is planned to arrive on April 5–6, another on April 9–10, and the third on April 12–13 this year.
Among the three cargoes, one cargo will be imported from the UK-based TotalEnergies Gas and Power Limited at a cost of Tk 907 crore 84 lakh 64 thousand 304, with a price of $21.58 per MMBtu.
Earlier, on December 9 last year, the government decided to purchase one cargo of LNG from the same UK-based company for Tk 436 crore 7 lakh 65 thousand 852, when the price was $10.37 per MMBtu. This means the current price is more than double compared to the previous purchase.
Similarly, importing LNG from South Korea will also cost more than double. One cargo will be purchased from POSCO International Corporation of South Korea at Tk 873 crore 34 lakh 99 thousand 488, with a price of $20.76 per MMBtu.
Another cargo will also be imported from the same South Korean company at the same price of Tk 873 crore 34 lakh 99 thousand 488, with the price set at $20.76 per MMBtu. This indicates that the government is spending more than double compared to last December to import LNG from South Korea as well.
