B Mirror Report: In accordance with a cash purchase agreement between the governments of Bangladesh and the United States, a ship transporting 58,457 metric tons of wheat from the United States has reached Mongla Port’s outer anchorage.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued today by the Ministry of Food.

According to the release, Bangladesh has already begun importing wheat from the United States on a government-to-government (G2G) basis, and all wheat imported under the agreement has now arrived in the country.

It said that under Contract-1, a total of 237,845 metric tonnes of wheat was imported, while 230,039 metric tonnes arrived under Contract-2, bringing the overall volume to 467,884 metric tonnes.

The country’s annual demand for wheat is around 70 lakh metric tonnes, while domestic production stands at about 10 lakh metric tonnes. To meet the remaining demand, both the government and private sector import wheat from abroad.

The release also said that sampling and testing of the wheat have already been completed and necessary steps have been taken to ensure its quick unloading.
