Mrinal Tangail Correspondent: Inspector General of Prisons, Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain, visited Tangail District Jail, where he inaugurated power looms installed under local management for the production of GI-recognized Tangail sarees and Jamdani sarees. The inauguration took place on Wednesday, 26 November, in the afternoon.
The initiative has been taken by the prison administration to make inmates skilled and employment-oriented. Speaking on the occasion, Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain said that prisons are not merely places of punishment but also important centers for correction and rehabilitation.
He further stated that in addition to Tangail and Jamdani sarees, Tangail District Jail is currently producing lungis, gamchas, prisoners’ clothing and sarees, tailoring of staff uniforms, shopping bags, stools, broomsticks, various handicraft showpieces made from manuscript-style crafts, nakshi kantha (embroidered quilts), and hand-roasted puffed rice. Through these initiatives, inmates are enhancing their work skills and gaining opportunities to become self-reliant in the future.
Those present at the event included Additional Deputy Commissioner of Tangail Md. Mahbub Hasan; Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Ops) Md Adibul Islam, PPM (Service); Jail Superintendent Md. Shahidul Islam; Jailer MD Zahedul Alam; Deputy Jailer Md. Masud Parvez Rubel; and other officials of the jail administration.
