Khokan Bikash Tripura Jack, Khagrachhari Correspondent: “Ensuring the Right to Information in the Digital Age for Environmental Protection” — with this theme, International Right to Information Day 2025 was celebrated in Khagrachhari with great enthusiasm and participation.
On Sunday (October 12), a colorful rally was brought out from the Upazila Parishad premises, parading through the main streets of the town before converging at the Upazila auditorium for a discussion meeting.
The event was organized with the financial support of the Embassy of Switzerland and Global Affairs Canada, implemented under the Empowerment Project by Trinamul Unnayan Sangstha (TDS) and Nagarikata: Civic Engagement Fund, and managed by GFA Consulting Group.
The discussion meeting was presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Abu Raihan, while Minuching Marma, Senior Project Officer of Trinamul Unnayan Sangstha, conducted the session.
Among others, Youth Development Officer Champak Kanti Chakma, ICT Officer Ms. Mahbuba Akter, Namita Chakma, Nirupen Chakma, and Empowerment Project Manager Shashwati Dewan, along with members of the organization and youth representatives, were present at the event.
Speakers at the discussion emphasized that the proper implementation of the Right to Information Act plays a vital role in protecting citizens’ fundamental rights and ensuring transparency and accountability in administration. They noted that facilitating greater public access to information can significantly enhance people’s participation in environmental conservation.
They further added that in today’s digital era, the freer the flow of information, the more corruption will decline, public awareness will grow, and sustainable development will be achieved. The speakers also called for increased local-level community engagement to preserve ecological balance and environmental integrity.
The discussants opined that the philosophy of “Information is Power” must be realized in practice by raising awareness among citizens about their right to information and by enhancing the capacity of information officers. When citizens can exercise their right to know, they become empowered to hold authorities accountable and ensure good governance, development, and environmental harmony.
In conclusion, participants pledged to work collectively to safeguard the right to information, promote accurate dissemination of information, and build an environmentally conscious society.
