HM Imran, Jhenaidah: The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has removed the body of a youth who was found floating in the Ichamati river on the Palianpur border in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah. The body was recovered from the Indian side of the Ichamati river in Hudapara area adjacent to Palianpur BOP in Maheshpur at around 9:50 pm on Friday (April 11).
The body was identified as that of a Bangladeshi youth named Wasim Ali (24) by others who entered India with him.
Wasim was identified as the son of Ramzan Ali of Bunopara in Baghadanga village of Maheshpur upazila by his companions.
It has been alleged that the BSF threw the youth into the river after torturing him. Later, local Bangladeshis saw the body floating and informed the BGB. Earlier, locals saw the body floating in the river since noon on Friday (April 11).
Wasim’s family claims that the BSF tortured and killed him and then dumped the body in the river. After this incident, a shadow of mourning has fallen on Wasim’s village house.
UP member Obaidul Islam of Baghadanga village said that on Friday afternoon, a farmer from Hudapara village saw the body floating in the river on his way to the field. After receiving the information, the BGB went to the spot and confirmed the matter. However, as the body was in the river, its identity was unknown until 10:30 pm on Friday. Later, Wasim’s companions said that it was his body.
It is learned that Wasim Ali had entered India to smuggle drugs. He was accompanied by Abdus Sobhan of Solemanpur village in Maheshpur, Raju, Shabuddin, Manik of Kanchanpur village and Abdul Wahed of Baghadanga. Wasim’s companions confirmed that the floating body was Wasim’s.
Wasim’s elder brother Mehedi Hasan said, “My brother has been missing for three to four days. I heard that he used to travel to India from time to time. On April 8, some people including Wasim crossed the border to India. While returning, the BSF chased them, but the others managed to escape, but Wasim was caught. Later, the BSF beat him to death.
Wasim’s father Ramzan Ali said, “I have learned from various sources that the body floating in the river is my son’s. He demanded that the body be recovered immediately.”
58 BGB Khalishpur Camp Commander Lieutenant Colonel Rafiqul Alam said that the body was floating in the Indian part of the Ichamati River, so the BSF took it. The matter has been reported to the BSF. It is not yet confirmed whether the body is Bangladeshi or Indian.
Maheshpur Police Station OC Faiz Uddin Mridha said, “A body was lying on the other side of the Bangladesh border on the Indian part of the Ichamati River. The BSF took the body around 10 pm.” The BGB is working on the matter.
