The Fall of the Capital Market: Low-Quality IPO Edition

Many low-quality IPOs have come in the last 15 years. This has damaged the capital market, said Minhaj Mannan Emon, Director of Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC (DSE). He also said that steps have been taken to stop low-quality IPOs.

He said these things at an awareness workshop organized by DSE Training Academy at the Army Institute of Business Administration in Savar on Tuesday (December 3). The workshop was organized as part of a series of academic education awareness workshops focused on capital market for teachers and students of public and private universities.

This information was confirmed in a press release signed by Public Relations and Publication Officer Deputy General Manager Md. Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday (December 3).

DSE officials participated in this workshop under the leadership of Army Institute of Business Administration Director General Major General (Retd.) Mohammad Kamruzzaman.

In his closing remarks, DSE Director Minhaj Mannan Emon said, “When investing in the capital market, it is necessary to know when, where and why to invest. For this, investment education is very important. You cannot invest emotionally. Also, you have to invest when the share price is low, looking at the company’s performance and entrepreneurs and directors.”

He also said that in the last 15 years, many low-quality IPOs have come to the capital market. Which has damaged the capital market. For this reason, steps have been taken to stop low-quality IPOs. In addition, money laundering abroad has been stopped. Which will play an important role in the economic development of the country.

DSE Acting Managing Director Satwik Ahmed Shah welcomed everyone at the event and said, “Today’s program is a golden opportunity for you to increase your knowledge about the capital market. You will be able to gain practical knowledge about the capital market from this workshop. Which will help you in your investment in the capital market and in your workplace in the future.”

DSE Independent Director and DG of the Army Institute of Business Administration, Major General (Retd) Mohammad Kamruzzaman said, the more good quality companies there are in the capital market, the more the capital market will improve. The capital market has reached its current state due to the listing of several bad companies in the past. We hope that companies with good fundamentals will be listed in the future.

DSE Deputy General Manager Syed Al-Amin Rahman presented the keynote speech at the awareness workshop. In the keynote speech, he shed light on various topics including the basic concept of the capital market and the current situation of the capital market, growth of the capital market and investment strategies. Later, DSE Director Minhaj Mannan Emon and General Manager and COO (in-charge) Md. Chamiul Islam answered various questions.
