Withdrawal of age limit for appointment of Governor.

The provision regarding the maximum age limit for the appointment of the Governor of Bangladesh Bank has been abolished. As per the existing law, no one above the age of 67 was eligible to become a governor.

A resolution in this regard was approved in the advisory council meeting at the Rashtriya Guest House Yamuna on Tuesday (August 13). Chief advisor. Muhammad Yunus presided over it.

According to the notification, the provision of clause (5) of Article 10 of The Bangladesh Bank Order 1972 (President’s Order No. 127 of 1972) relating to the age of the Governor of Bangladesh Bank was further amended by The Bangladesh Bank (Amendment) Act, 2020 on 9 July 2020. Passed in parliament. According to the amendment, a person can hold the post of governor till the age of 67 years. Bangladesh Bank appoints a person with experience in financial sector as governor.

The notification also said that the age limit for this post is 67 years, which creates obstacles in appointing a person with skills and experience in the financial sector as the governor. In many Asian countries, including neighboring countries India and Sri Lanka, there is no upper age limit for the post of central bank governor. In this situation, the proposal to abolish the provision of Clause (5) of Article 10 regarding the age limit of the Governor of Bangladesh Bank of 1972 (President’s Order No. 127 of 1972) has been approved.
