BM Desk : Tomorrow, Wednesday, there will be a meeting with the United States to discuss imposing a 35 percent levy on items imported from Bangladesh. Samakal received confirmation of this from Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin. “There is a meeting with the United States on this matter in July,” he stated on Tuesday. Bangladesh hopes for a positive outcome there.
In order to attend the meeting, the Trade Advisor is now in the United States.
Meanwhile, Golam Mortoza, the Press Minister of the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, D.C., stated on social media, “The 35 percent duty is not a final decision. Discussions are ongoing. July 9 is the date of the next discussion. Bangladesh is doing its utmost for a positive outcome, and that possibility has not been ruled out.”
Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman remarked, “Along with the letter imposing the 35 percent duty, the United States has sent a new document regarding the agreement.” When inquired about the contents of these documents, he replied, “It is quite a substantial document, and I have not yet had the chance to read it in its entirety. We need to understand what they are seeking and how much they are willing to negotiate if an agreement is achieved.”
US President Donald Trump has enacted new tariffs on 14 countries, including Bangladesh, prior to the expiration of the 90-day tariff break. A 35 percent tariff has been levied on goods imported from Bangladesh into the United States. He announced this on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Monday. Previously, the United States had imposed a 37 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods on April 2.
Despite the announcement of new tariffs on 14 countries, including Bangladesh, the US president has also indicated a willingness to negotiate with these nations. Although the new tariffs are expected to take effect from August 1, there remains an opportunity for negotiation.
