US court declares most of Trump’s tariffs illegal

A federal appeals court in the US has ruled that the majority of the additional tariffs placed on various nations during the administration of President Donald Trump are illegal.

In a decision released on Friday (August 29), the court stated that Trump misused the International Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

While the ruling mandated the Trump administration to rescind the heightened tariffs, the Supreme Court has retained the option to appeal the decision. This ruling is set to take effect on October 14.

Out of the 11 judges who took part in the hearing to deliver the ruling on Friday, seven deemed Trump’s tariff policy “unlawful”.

The court indicated that the new tariffs could lead to a legal dispute. The US court has labeled the tariffs enacted under emergency economic powers as illegal, asserting that the president lacks such authority. Only Congress possesses the power to impose tariffs.

Following the ruling, Trump voiced his frustration on social media, stating, “If this order is implemented, the country and the economy will be ruined.” He referred to the tariff rollback as “100% disastrous” and mentioned that the decision would be contested in the Supreme Court, asserting that the United States would ultimately prevail.
