Financial adviser Saleh Uddin Ahmed said that he has received assurances that the GSP benefits will be restored if the conditions given by the United States are met. Such information emerged during a discussion about GSP in the garment sector with Helen Lafave, acting ambassador of the United States Embassy, at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday.
The adviser said that the United States had some observations on labor rights, which were discussed. The financial adviser assured Helen Lafave, acting ambassador of the United States Embassy, that this issue will be resolved quickly. Saleh Uddin Ahmed said that electricity and climate were also discussed in the meeting.
Meanwhile, the United States canceled Bangladesh’s GSP benefits in June 2013 on the condition of improving the working environment. Bangladesh has not been able to bring back this benefit even after the imposition of preferential market facilities or GSP in the country’s market.
