The United States and the United Kingdom will provide an additional $96 million in aid for the Rohingyas. The pledge was made at the United Nations’ first high-level conference on the issue.
On the night of Wednesday (October 1), the Senior Assistant Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Fayez Ahmed, shared this information in a Facebook post.
In the post, he wrote that at the first high-level conference on the Rohingya issue held at the UN Headquarters on Tuesday, the US and UK announced a new aid commitment of $96 million. Of this, the United States pledged $60 million and the United Kingdom $36 million.
At the high-level conference titled “The Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar” held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday (September 30), Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that the root cause of the Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar and the solution must also come from there. He emphasized that the international community must exert effective pressure on Myanmar and the Arakan Army to stop the persecution of the Rohingyas and take immediate steps for their repatriation to Rakhine.
He added that even eight years after the genocide began, the suffering of the Rohingyas continues. There is a lack of adequate initiatives to resolve the crisis, and international funding is facing a concerning shortfall.
